The Fall of Yemen

“The country has dissolved into near anarchy. It has always been a mix of tribes and clans and factions. It is the result of a merger of two separate Yemens some thirty plus years ago. It was a stable government up until the Arab Spring. It was basically cast adrift by the Obama Administration.

“What we have now is a fragmented country. We’ve got some people we’d like to see in power to help us in the war against terrorism, but most dangerously, we have the Houthi clan and tribe– an adherence to an offshoot of Shiite Islam– in the grip of Iran. Many people think they’re holding open the back door of the Arabian Peninsula and all that oil producing wealth there. They are now in charge of the capital there. They want autonomy in their large region bordering on Saudi Arabia.”
